Horse Blanketing Myths & Tips: How to Blanket Smarter (Not Heavier)

Blanketing isn’t about “toughing it out” or piling on weight. It’s about comfort and consistency; and adjusting for coat, clipping, wet weather, and big temperature swings. There’s no one-size-fits-all rule, but there is a simple system that keeps horses comfortable without overheating.

Blanket Myths

Myth 1: “Blanket by temperature alone.”
Reality: Use temperature as a starting point, then factor in coat thickness, body condition, wind, rain, and shelter.

Myth 2: “If they’re blanketed, they can’t get too warm.”
Reality: Overheating happens a lot, especially when mornings are cold and afternoons warm up. Sweat under the blanket is your clearest signal.

Myth 3: “Clipped horses are fine with the same setup.”
Reality: Clipped horses generally need blanketing sooner and often need more protection at the same temps.

Myth 4: “One heavy blanket is easiest.”
Reality: Layers give you flexibility (swap a liner/sheet vs. re-rugging from scratch), which helps prevent overheating during temperature swings.

Myth 5: “A little rubbing is normal.”
Reality: Rubbing is usually a fit/weight issue. A well-fitting blanket should stay stable through turnout without pinching shoulders or sliding back.

A simple decision system (what to check first)

Use this order:

1. Is the coat doing its job?
If the coat is fluffy/lofted and dry, many horses stay comfortable at surprisingly low temps.
2. What’s the weather doing (wind/rain)?
Wet + wind changes everything; waterproof turnout matters more than adding weight.
3. Is your horse clipped / senior / hard keeper?
These horses often need help earlier than the “average” horse.
4. Do the under-blanket check (daily)
Feel under the chest/shoulder: warm + dry = ideal, sweaty = too much.

Quick temperature framework (use as a starting point)

Blanketing charts are useful as guidance (not rules). A common framework is:

  • Above ~50°F: often no blanket for many horses
  • 40–50°F: sheet/lightweight for clipped or sensitive horses
  • 30–40°F: more horses may benefit from light/medium depending on factors
  • Colder: increase protection based on individual needs

Reminder: Always adjust for wind/rain, clipping, and your horse’s body condition.

Pro tips that prevent 90% of blanketing mistakes

  • Don’t “set and forget.” Check once midday if temps swing.
  • Layer for flexibility. Liners/sheets are easier than swapping heavy rugs.
  • Fit matters as much as fill. Stable, no shoulder pinch, no sliding back.
  • Keep it dry. Waterproof turnout beats extra grams when it’s wet and windy.
