- Nick Haness
Nick Haness is a top hunter/jumper professional based in Temecula, California, where he runs Hunterbrook Farms. He’s known for his consistency in the ring and has built a reputation for producing top results in both hunters and jumpers across the country.
Named USEF National Equestrian of the Year in 2019, Nick is also one of only a handful of U.S. riders to surpass $5 million in career earnings. He was recognized as Chronicle of the Horse’s Hunter Person of the Year in 2022 and continues to add major wins to his record, including top finishes in leading hunter classes in 2024.
At the core of his program is a horse-first approach, with a strong focus on care, patience, and consistency. Something that shows in both his results and the way his horses perform.
In the Barn with Nick Haness
How do you handle nerves before an important class?
I actually see nerves as a good thing. If I get butterflies before a big class, it usually means I care and I’m excited to compete. I try to use that energy in a positive way and stay focused on doing the best I can with the horse I have that day.
How do you prepare for an event like the International Hunter Derby Finals?
The Derby Finals are something we look forward to all year. I think of them almost like the Olympics of the hunter world, so the horses need to arrive fit, strong, and looking their best. In the month leading up to it, we focus on conditioning, galloping on grass, building strength behind, and making sure their bodies, coats, and overall presentation are where they need to be.
What goes into producing a horse that looks and feels like a champion?
It starts from the inside out. Good feed, quality hay, the right supplements, and consistent daily care all matter. We curry them, use liniment baths, manage their coats carefully, and pay attention to all the small details. There really isn’t one shortcut — it’s the combination of good horsemanship and doing the basics well every day.
What are your biggest horse-care icks?
Skipping steps is a big one for me. You can’t expect a horse to look beautifully presented if you haven’t put in the work from the beginning. I also notice a dirty barn immediately. I like everything clean, swept, organized, and smelling fresh.
How does your team maintain such a high standard across the barn?
Organization is a huge part of it. We have a clear plan for every horse, including turnout, therapy, walking, and daily care. Each team member knows their horses closely, so they can notice even the smallest change, like a new scratch or something that feels slightly off. That individual attention helps us keep every horse comfortable and prepared.
What advice would you give the next generation of hunter/jumper riders?
Be involved with your horses. Know them, care for them, and spend real time around them. Keep believing in yourself, keep dreaming, and listen to your horses. Trust your instincts, treat people well, and always try to do right by the horse.
