Samantha VanSickle

Area of Expertise: Gypsy Vanners Location: Bangor, CA Charity: St Jude Children’s Hospital Samantha is the owner and head trainer at the Starfire Training Center where she and her team specialize in training, showing and breeding some of the most highly acclaimed and successful Gypsy Vanners in the country. Her passion for all things equine started at the age of two when her parents let her go on her first pony ride at the local zoo. She started taking lessons not long after and grew up apprenticing with a number of trainers in a wide range of disciplines. From rodeo events and dressage to polo and combined driving, she took advantage of every opportunity with the goal of one day owning her own training center. That dream became a reality and over the years she has specialized in a wide variety of disciplines and breeds. In 2010 Samantha and her husband and fellow trainer, CJ VanSickle were introduced to the Gypsy Vanner breed. That introduction sparked an incredible journey that has led them all across the country and to hundreds of World, National, Supreme and Championship titles. Samantha is currently coaching the highest points leading youth and amateurs in the nation along with personally leading the nation in open points with her mounts, GFR Excalibur Elite Essence of Eden and CKB Highfield Grand as Owt. One of Samantha’s passions is sharing her knowledge and years of experience through the Starfire apprenticeship program. The program offers opportunities for both youth and adult apprentices who want to learn more about showing, training, stable management and/or equine reproduction. When Samantha isn’t working around the ranch she spends time writing for a number of equine publications and working on a range of educational booklets, videos and clinics focused on every aspect of the horse industry from grooming, reproduction, showing, training, problem solving and more.

Samantha Walker

Area of Expertise: Pony of the Americas - Breed Location: Scottsdale, AZ Charity: Camelot Therapeutic Horsemanship, Inc. Samantha started out showing POAs as a youth and won national titles in a variety of classes such as Hunter Under Saddle, Hunter Over Fences, Barrel Racing, Western Pleasure and Trail. As an adult, Samantha secured the 2017 and 2018 19 & over Ranch Riding Champion, along with the 2017 POA 19 & over Reining Champion and the 2017 Futurity Reining Champion. Her students have also won multiple national championships in the last couple years in reining, western riding, horsemanship and jumping. Samantha was able to start training and starting POAs at a young age thanks to Diana Peaton, who encouraged her riders to put all of the work into themselves. She has been able to train with some outstanding western trainers as an adult, including going through Brandi Lyons Certification program, which gave her the fundamentals of horsemanship that she carries with her into all of her training. Samantha has also been lucky to live next to some amazing dressage trainers, who help her keep her fundamentals fine tuned and push her to never stop improving. To Samantha, riding is an opportunity to better yourself every day, so she continues to learn whenever she can. She's been the most successful in ranch riding, and she loves the ranch versatility events, but she believes an English saddle makes for a stronger rider. Samantha states "Let's not limit ourselves. As long as the horse is happy, you should have some fun!" If you want to contact Samantha or learn more about POAs, you can find her at https://swphorses.com/.

Expert Tip:

As their name suggests, fly masks are the best way to protect your horse's eyes and ears from pesky flies during the summer months. Fly masks are also incredible all year long at protecting your horse's eyes from the sun's harmful UV rays, along with keeping dust/dirt from scratching or irritating them. (Think of them as colorful sunglasses!) Many horse's get swollen and uncomfortable eyes simply from the sun and dust alone, so it is always a good idea to have a quality fly mask on hand, especially when turning out.
